Q

Do you have any recommendations for alternative versions of fairytales?

I am looking for an interesting book that is based on a traditional fairytale but not the same story. I was looking for books that would be suitable for a 7th grader.

Hi!

We received your request for a book based on a classic fairy tale. We have many books that fit this description. Here are just a few suggestions:

If you’re not already familiar with it, there is the Lunar Chronicles series by Marissa Meyer:

Cinder
Scarlet
Cress
Winter
Fairest

Each title in the series takes the bare bones of a classic fairy tale and spins it into a new story with futuristic twists.

Alex Flinn has also updated several fairy tales with modern settings including:
A Kiss In Time
Beastly
Cloaked

Cloaked in Red by Vivian Vande Velde is a collection of stories based on Little Red Riding Hood.

A Tale Dark and Grimm by Adam Gidwitz weaves several different fairy tales into one new story.

Another one is Snow White by Matt Phelan. It’s set in gritty 1920s New York City and told in graphic novel form.

I hope one or more of these books fit what you’re looking for! Please let us know if you have any further questions, or we can be of assistance in any other way.
